transpixel Ok, finally getting around to doing another 'Process' gallery...It's been a while since I've done this illustration, so trying to remember the actual process :)

Ok, first page was just some sketchbook work. (Actually I don't keep a bound sketchbook. I just keep loose sheets of paper on a clipboard. less pressure to make sure everything looks nice :) so if something's really bad I can just chuck it :D )

So here we are just working out some poses. I've got in my mind a general idea of what I want it to look like... transpixel

transpixel More detailed sketch, but it's still not quite working for me. back to the drawing board! transpixel

transpixel
transpixel A looser sketch just to get some better body language going. The earlier sketch was way too stiff. transpixel

transpixel Ok, now we're getting close...seemed to have stiffened up a bit from the sketch. But at this point it was getting close. Usually at this point when I think it's 'done' I'll set it aside for a little while. Then go back to it and see what my first thoughts are on seeing it again. transpixel

transpixel Well...decided to do one last pass on the drawing. And found I liked this one better. plus more cleavage is always good, right? ;) transpixel

transpixel And now I bring it into Painter and start the coloring process. No great tricks here. I usually start with the face, because that's what interests me the most. If the face isn't working, the rest of it has no chance.

Just starting on the hightlights/shadows. Determining where my lightsource is coming from.

Sometimes I'll do the background first and incorporate those colors into the skin...but to be honest I think I wasn't quite sure what kind of background I wanted on this one...ah well, live and learn. transpixel

transpixel Just a closeup to see some of the details better. The spider web on the dress was a lot of fun to do.

At this point there's still nothing fancy going on. Just the same few tools I always use. The airbrush, pencil, and a blender or two. No selections, gradiant fills, or any of that fancy stuff. I just like to approach it in a more 'painterly' style. Using very few layers here, just to keep me on my toes :) (I used to use many, many layers for coloring. Mostly because I was afraid of 'messing up' somewhere when I wanted to experiment.

Now I've learned to just go with it :) and hope for the best. Paying attention to things like color theory (buy a color wheel!), lighting, warm and cool color combinations....things like that. transpixel

transpixel Started on the pumpkins, and working ont he backgroudn colors. I wanted it to be night, but didn't want the dark background obscuring her dress. So worked in more purples/blues than actual black. also started to add some rim lighting to her, to help seperate from the background. transpixel

transpixel And Ta - Daaa! :) at this point it was just adding more details. Tightening up some spots. but keeping other's a little loose. (I just happen to like it that look :))

Anyway, there you have it. Another look into the way that I work...follow at your own risk, you're mileage may vary.. transpixel
